Background of the study:
Accessibility of health services for persons with disabilities is a critical component of an inclusive healthcare system. In Ikorodu Local Government Area, significant challenges exist in ensuring that health facilities are accessible, affordable, and sensitive to the unique needs of persons with disabilities (Adebayo, 2023). Structural barriers, including inaccessible buildings, lack of specialized equipment, and limited trained personnel, hinder the delivery of quality healthcare. Social stigmas and inadequate policy implementation further exacerbate these issues (Olasupo, 2024). Recent initiatives have aimed to improve accessibility, yet gaps remain, resulting in lower utilization of health services among persons with disabilities. This study examines the factors affecting healthcare accessibility for disabled individuals by analyzing facility audits, patient surveys, and interviews with healthcare providers. The objective is to develop a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and propose interventions that promote an inclusive healthcare environment, ensuring equitable access for all community members (Balogun, 2025).
Statement of the problem:
Persons with disabilities in Ikorodu face significant barriers to accessing quality healthcare. Structural, financial, and social obstacles limit their use of available health services, leading to disparities in health outcomes. Addressing these barriers is critical to promoting inclusive healthcare (Olatunde, 2023).
Objectives of the study:
1. To evaluate the accessibility of health services for persons with disabilities.
2. To identify the key barriers hindering access.
3. To recommend strategies to improve service accessibility.
Research questions:
1. What is the current level of accessibility of health services in Ikorodu?
2. Which barriers most significantly impact persons with disabilities?
3. How can health services be made more inclusive?
Research Hypotheses:
1. Inadequate infrastructure significantly limits healthcare access for persons with disabilities.
2. Financial constraints contribute to low utilization of health services among disabled individuals.
3. Policy improvements will enhance service accessibility for persons with disabilities.
Significance of the study:
This study highlights the challenges faced by persons with disabilities in accessing healthcare, providing data crucial for the development of inclusive policies and facility improvements that enhance service delivery in Ikorodu (Ogunyemi, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to assessing the accessibility of health services for persons with disabilities in Ikorodu Local Government Area, focusing solely on local facility audits and user experiences.
Definitions of terms:
1. Accessibility: The ease with which services can be reached and used by all individuals.
2. Persons with Disabilities: Individuals with physical, mental, or sensory impairments that affect their daily activities.
3. Inclusive Healthcare: Health services designed to meet the needs of all community members, including those with disabilities.
